You want to study the Bible more deeply.
You sit down, open your Bible, and suddenly you’re not sure what to do next.
Do you start in Genesis? Matthew? Psalms?
Should you pick a random verse or follow a Bible reading plan?
Do you grab a journal or find a trustworthy commentary?
If this sounds familiar (like I just described your quiet time today), then this post is for you!
There are so many ways to study the Bible that sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.
And if you’ve ever been there before, I want you to know that, girl, you’re not alone!
We’ve all had to start somewhere when it comes to studying the Bible, and the good news? We all still have more to learn!
None of us will ever know all there is to know about the Bible or our God . . . and that’s what makes our God so amazing!
But there are some tools and practices that can help us in our pursuit to study God’s Word.
If you’ve ever stared at your Bible wondering, “Where do I even begin?!” here are some tips to help!
Instead of opening your Bible to a random page each day, choose one Book of the Bible and spend some time there.
If you’re new to studying Scripture, you might start with one of the Gospels, like John or Mark. You could also choose a shorter book like James, Philippians, or Ruth.
The goal isn’t to read as much as possible but to deeply understand what you’re reading.
This may mean you read the same verse, chapter, or book several times before moving on, and that’s okay! Sometimes, the best Scripture study comes from staying and meditating on the same Scripture for days or weeks.
This is where Bible reading becomes Bible studying.
Ask yourself questions like:
You don’t need a fancy study method to do this. Just grab a notebook, underline something in your Bible, or jot your thoughts in the margins. I still have some journaling Bibles in stock that are perfect for this!
Bible study shouldn’t end with, “Well, that was interesting!”
God’s Word is meant to change us.
After you’ve read and studied the passage, ask: What is God showing me?
Is there something I need to believe?
Something I need to obey?
A sin I need to confess?
A truth I need to remember?
A way I need to love or serve someone?
Then pray about it.
Ask God to help you not just become someone who knows more about the Bible, but someone who lives according to what it says.
